"Spaces that evoke emotion and spirituality – I think that's what good architecture is all about," said architect Edmund Ng, principal of Edmund Ng Architects. His make clean designs and artistic sensibilities can exist seen in projects built in Singapore and away.
Recently, Ng took on a project of detail significance – his own home. Using the narrow width of the land plot to his reward, Ng deconstructed rooms and integrated functions to create a unique space.
"Information technology'south a house that is my piece of work of art," said Ng, an art lover who has been married for vii years to Jazz Chong, an art collector and founder of gallery Ode to Art. "Of course, it'due south an extension of ourselves. Interestingly, there was no discussion [with my wife] about how the business firm should expect like."
Thankfully, his wife'south initial reaction to the infinite was a favourable ane. "When she start walked through the door, I could see a big grinning on her face. And that'southward the best reward that any builder edifice their own home can go. It fell into place, and everyone's comfy," he said.
Ng embraces a Japanese design philosophy called wabi-sabi. "It means to gloat imperfection as a form of beauty," he explained.
The bungalow features an ascetic facade that belies a warm, inviting interior designed to showcase their mutual obsession, art.
As such, the abode'due south basement features an in-house fine art gallery that displays his wife's extensive contemporary art collection, which features an eclectic mix of paintings and sculptures. The gallery walls are fabricated of fair-faced concrete, which Ng considers "the nigh perfect sail whereby anything can be hung, removed, with nail marks that are not patched up, and it'due south still a class of natural dazzler".
Unusually, the living room does non feature any large glass windows or sliding doors; instead, the but views come up from two tiny slits of glass inside a large physical block which resembles a bunker. "It's a curated decision," explained Ng, "We wanted to frame the view, to look into a curated landscape of trees being planted. So this is an in-looking sort of architecture."
He considers the dining room one of the well-nigh important spaces in his home.
"Dining is always one of the main activities in the firm, and we do entertain quite a fair flake, so it has to be the main focus of the business firm," explained Ng, who enjoys cooking upward a storm, and co-hosting large parties, with his married woman.
